Turnpike official discusses reasoning for latest toll increase

Another year, another toll increase on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

This week, the Turnpike Commission approved a five percent toll increase for 2024.

The increase will take effect starting January 7th and will impact all E-Z Pass and toll by plate customers.

"We recognize that our customers pay a premium for travel on our roadway," explained Carl DeFebo, the Director of Marketing and Public Relations for the Pennsylvania Turnpike. "And we hope that we’re delivering a premium experience on the turnpike. We’ve invested billions of dollars on our system over the last 15-20 years and we will continue to invest to make improvements to our system to give a better travel experience to our customers."

Turnpike officials say they are legally mandated to raise toll rates each year to provide PennDOT with funding for transit systems statewide, as outlined by Act 44 of 2007.

Under Act 44, Turnpike officials say they are obligated to increase tolls every year, through at least 2053, although they say they hope to reduce the increase to three percent by 2028.
