HUNTINGDON, Pa. (WJAC) — Around 50 fire departments battled a large fire in Huntingdon, which broke out just before midnight.
The fire was at the Huntingdon Electric Motor Service and the Blair House, which is an apartment building along Penn Street.
Huntingdon Regional Fire Rescue District Chief Tim Furlong said the fire started in the rear of the building and spread to the apartment building next door, displacing residents as a result of both fire damage and water damage. Those residents are working with the EMA to find new housing.
According to officials on scene, they contained the fire as long as they could, until successfully evacuating the building.
American Red Cross officials say those who were displaced by the blaze are now either with family members or at the Motor Inn.
Officials say residents were not able to grab any belongings, and some even lost their pets to the blaze.
As a result of the fire Penn Street is currently closed from 5th to 8th Streets, and 7th street from Washington to Penn Street as well.
Officials ask for residents to avoid the area due to the risk of falling debris.
Officials say no one was seriously injured in this blaze however one firefighter was transported to a nearby hospital with an ankle injury.
District Chief Furlong estimates over 50 fire companies answered the call, including Huntingdon, Blair, and Mifflin counties.
